What is a tensile gazebo or conical shade?
A tensile gazebo is an open-sided membrane roof pulled up to a central mast or stretched between perimeter posts. Sizes run from about 3 × 3 m, seating four to six, to multi-mast structures over 10 m across. PVC or PVDF membranes suit most gardens; PTFE-coated glass is used for permanent, non-combustible roofs.

- 10 m and more
- Multi-mast, over event lawns
Overview
A tensile gazebo has no walls and almost no weight. The fabric is pulled up to a mast or stretched between posts, and that tension is the whole structure.
A single central mast gives a cone. Four or six perimeter posts give a saddle or a shallow dome. The span is limited by the form and the wind at your site, not by the fabric.
Against timber or sheet roofs, a welded membrane does not leak at the joints, does not sag after a monsoon, and needs no annual re-staining. Small garden gazebos sit on a pad or a bolted base plate; larger event structures get footings sized for uplift.

Forms and layouts
Four shapes cover nearly every garden and lawn.
- 01
Conical
The membrane pulled up to a high ring on one mast. The classic single peak, and it drains itself.
- 02
Hypar (saddle)
Two high corners and two low. A more contemporary shape that suits a square footprint.
- 03
Tiered dome
Radial ribs forming a stepped dome, with a gap between tiers for light and air. For larger function spaces.
- 04
Multi-peak
A cluster of small cones covering a wider area while keeping the peaked character. Common over banquet frontages.
Where it is used
Built for the way each site works.
Resort and hotel gardens
Seating pods, photo points and lawn shelters.
Restaurant terraces
All-weather outdoor covers.
Poolsides
Shade beside the water without closing it in.
Corporate campuses
Break-out spaces between buildings.
Private lawns
A permanent outdoor room for a home.
Event lawns and plazas
Multi-mast cover over large gatherings.
Specification
What gets specified.
There is no fixed spec. Structure, membrane and finish are recommended after we have seen the site, the layout, the local wind and the budget.
- Form
- Conical, hypar, tiered dome or multi-peak, chosen from the footprint and setting
- Membrane
- PVC-coated polyester for most work; PVDF for longer life and colour hold; PTFE-glass for a permanent, non-combustible roof
- Colour
- Across the PVC and PVDF ranges; PTFE-glass is white
- Frame
- Galvanised steel mast, rings and perimeter, painted or stainless-detailed where exposed
- Sides
- Open by default; screens or roll-down blinds can be added
- Lighting
- Uplighting onto the membrane, with wiring hidden in the mast
- Foundations
- Pad footings to IS 456, sized for uplift and mast compression
- Warranty
- One year on structure and workmanship; five to fifteen years on the membrane, by fabric grade

From a 3 × 3 m cone for four people to multi-mast structures over 10 m across. Above a certain size the form and your local wind decide the span, not the fabric.
The coated membrane sheds rain and blocks almost all UV. The sides are open by default, so where wind-driven rain is a problem we add screens or roll-down blinds.
Yes. Uplighting onto the underside of the membrane makes it glow, and the wiring runs inside the mast. It is easier to plan at the start than to add later.
