Retractable roofs · Price in India
What it costs.
Ask what a fixed canopy costs and a rate per square foot is a fair start. Ask the same about a retractable roof and the range is wider, because the moving system does not scale with area.

How much does a retractable roof cost in India?
Most installed retractable roofs fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft plus GST, and a moving roof sits higher in that range than a fixed one of the same area. Six things decide where yours lands: the number of moving bays and their drive, the span, how often it opens, the power, control and safety chain, the membrane, and drainage in every position.

What moves the number
Three systems delivered together: a fixed frame, a membrane and a machine. Only one of them scales with area.
- 01
The movement system
On a retractable roof the drive, not the fabric, is usually the headline cost. Each moving bay carries its own drive and has to stay in step, so the number of moving bays sets much of the mechanical cost.
- 02
Span
A wider opening deepens the trusses, which grows the columns, which grows the foundations. Span also lengthens the rails and tightens alignment, so it shows up twice on the quote.
- 03
How often it opens
A banquet lawn opened for events, a restaurant opened most evenings and an industrial bay opened for crane access are three different drive specifications for the same opening.
- 04
Power, control and safety
Interlocks, per-bay controllers, limit switches, end stops and position monitoring are not optional over occupied space. Whether three-phase power exists on site is a real line item.
- 05
The membrane
PVC pleats and re-tensions well and is economical. A PVDF finish buys durability and self-cleaning; PTFE costs more and lasts longer. The span and the duty decide, not a preference.
- 06
Drainage in every position
A fixed roof drains one way. A retractable roof drains closed, open and everywhere between, which is coordinated at detailed design.
Matters less than you'd think
Three things clients over-weigh.
Colour
Within a membrane family, close to cost-neutral.
Remote or wall panel
A small part of a control system whose real content is the safety logic.
Exact plan shape
Within reason. The opening dimension moves the number; the outline rarely does.
Before we quote
Five answers get you a real figure.
- 01The plan dimensions of the opening
- 02The height available above it
- 03Watertight, or is shade enough?
- 04Roughly how often it will be opened
- 05Whether three-phase power is available
On your quote
Itemised, line by line.
- Covered area
- Fabric or polycarbonate
- Manual or motorised
- Number of moving bays
- Span and frame
- Fixing to an existing slab
- Gutters and drainage
- Power and controls
- Site access and floor level
For a terrace, send the size, a few photos and the floor it is on. For a venue, the plan dimensions of the opening and whether three-phase power is on site.
Most installed projects fall between ₹280 and ₹2,500 per sq ft plus GST. A moving roof sits towards the higher end compared with a fixed one of the same area, and the final figure depends on the number of moving bays, the span, how often it opens, the controls, the membrane and the drainage.
Because it is a fixed structure plus a machine. The drive, rails, carriages, controls and safety devices are added to the steel and membrane, and the frame has to carry the bays in every position.
It adds the drive, controls and a power point, and on larger roofs the safety chain. On a balcony or small pergola manual is usually enough; on a large terrace or a roof opened daily the motor is worth it. Adding one later costs more than fitting it at the start.
A figure given before anyone has looked at the span, the duty and the power supply is a placeholder, and on moving structures placeholders tend to move upward. Ask what each quote assumes about bays, drive, membrane and drainage.
No. The ₹280–2,500 per sq ft range is before GST, which is added on the invoice.
