What tensile structures do hotels and banquet venues use?

Hotel and banquet tensile structures cover event lawns, porte-cochères, terraces and poolsides, with columns kept out of the seating and the dance floor. Conical, inverted-umbrella and hypar forms are the most common. PVDF-lacquered PVC is the usual membrane, and lighting is designed with the structure so the roof glows at night.

Overview

For a venue, the covered area is the product. A lawn that works through the monsoon and the peak of summer is a lawn that can be booked all year.

The clear span is set by the event layout, not the plot boundary: columns go outside the seating, the dance floor and the mandap. The form is chosen for what the guest sees, then engineered for the wind.

Lighting has to be designed in at the start. A translucent membrane lit from below reads as one glowing surface at night, but fixture positions, cable routes and the membrane's translucency all affect each other, and retrofitting is much harder.

Forms and layouts

Each form drains and reads differently.

  1. 01

    Conical

A high central mast with the membrane falling to the edge. Sheds water outward and gives a sense of occasion.

  2. 02

    Inverted umbrella

The membrane rises to the edge and drains to a central column, keeping the whole perimeter open.

  3. 03

    Hypar

Two high corners and two low. Dynamic to look at and stable because of its double curvature.

  4. 04

    Barrel vault and sail

Quieter forms for walkways, terraces and long runs of seating.

FAQ

Common questions.

All questions
  1. Columns can sit outside the seating and dance areas. How far the roof can span between them depends on the wind at your site, the height, the membrane and the steel.

  2. Usually, yes. Fabrication happens in our workshop. On site, deliveries, crane lifts and noisy work are scheduled away from check-in, service and event hours, and the work area is screened.

  3. That depends mostly on the finish. PVDF-lacquered PVC keeps its colour and sheds dirt far better than a plain acrylic lacquer. PTFE-coated glass stays brightest for longest.
