What tensile structures do schools use?

School tensile structures cover assembly grounds, sports courts, walkways and drop-off points. Fabrication happens in the workshop so site work fits inside a holiday, hardware is shrouded or out of children's reach, and the fire class is set by the fire consultant and local authority. PVDF-lacquered PVC is the usual campus membrane.

Overview

A school can only lose a playground for so long. Most of the work is done in our workshop so the site work fits inside a holiday.

Steel is cut and profiled in the workshop and membrane panels are welded there. On site that leaves foundations, erection and tensioning. Holiday slots fill early, because design, approval and fabrication all have to finish before the break, so the survey usually happens months ahead.

Where work has to run in term time, the site is fully hoarded, deliveries and crane lifts avoid arrival, break and dispersal, and foundations near play areas are dug in sections so the space is never fully lost.

Forms and layouts

What schools usually ask us to cover.

  1. 01

    Assembly grounds

Large clear-span roofs over morning assembly, also used for events and sport.

  2. 02

    Sports courts

Basketball, badminton and multi-purpose courts, with columns kept outside the run-off zone.

  3. 03

    Covered walkways

Continuous cover between teaching blocks, labs and the canteen.

  4. 04

    Drop-off canopies

Porte-cochères sized to the real queue of vehicles, not the gate width.

  5. 05

    Waiting and break-out areas

Shaded seating, parent waiting zones and outdoor teaching space.

  6. 06

    Pool covers

UV and rain cover so the pool works through the year.

Specification

What gets specified.

There is no fixed spec. Structure, membrane and finish are recommended after we have seen the site, the layout, the local wind and the budget.

Fire
PVC and PVDF typically DIN 4102 B1; PTFE-glass non-combustible. The class is set by the fire consultant and the authority
Child safety
Turnbuckles, cable ends and tensioning hardware shrouded or out of reach; column bases clear of play areas
Steel
Designed to IS 800, hot-dip galvanised, detailed without sharp edges or low trap points
Drainage
Discharged away from walkways and play areas, so a blocked outlet cannot pond water over children
Membrane
PVDF-lacquered PVC is the usual campus choice; PTFE where the fire strategy requires it
Phasing
Frames designed so a master plan can be built in stages
Warranty
One year on structure and workmanship; five to fifteen years on the membrane, by fabric grade

FAQ

Common questions.

All questions
  1. Yes, if design, approval and fabrication are finished before the break. That usually means surveying a few months ahead and booking the holiday slot early.

  2. It is noticeably louder in heavy rain than a solid roof. For assembly and teaching spaces we raise this at design stage so the school can decide with that in mind.

  3. The project's fire consultant and the local authority. We supply the test certificate for whatever classification they specify.

  4. Roughly 15 to 20 years for PVDF-finished PVC and longer for PTFE. The steel frame outlasts the membrane, so the skin can be replaced on the same frame.
