05 — What we build

Pool & resort covers.

Shade for the water and the deck that takes the glare off without darkening the pool. From a sail over a villa pool to a barrel vault over a lap pool and its stands.

What is a swimming pool tensile structure?

A pool tensile roof shades the water and deck with a translucent membrane that diffuses daylight and cuts glare. Barrel vaults suit lap pools and sails suit private pools. Because pool air is warm, humid and full of chlorine, the steel is hot-dip galvanised and the cables and fittings are stainless.

Overview

Glare, leaves and hours of sun. A translucent roof takes all three off the water and keeps the light.

Direct sun makes lane markings and finishes hard to judge, wind-blown leaves foul the water and load the filters, and swimmers and spectators need shade for hours at a time. A tensile roof answers all three. A translucent membrane diffuses the daylight, giving even, shadow-free light over the water, and the form is pitched to drain to the eaves, clear of the pool.

The pool environment is warm, humid and full of chlorine, so the specification steps up: hot-dip galvanised steel, stainless cables and fittings, and a coated membrane with a durable, cleanable surface.

Forms and layouts

The form follows the pool.

  1. 01

    Barrel vault

A curved membrane across the poolside, repeated along the length. The standard for a lap or competition pool, on columns set behind the deck.

  2. 02

    Sail or hypar

An anticlastic sail over a smaller private pool. Open, light and quick to install, shading water and deck.

  3. 03

    Ridge and valley

A folded roof over a very wide pool or an aquatics complex, with the valleys as drainage lines.

  4. 04

    Deck cantilever

Where only the deck and stands need cover and the water itself can stay open to the sky.

Where it is used

Built for the way each site works.

  • Private and villa pools

A sail or small vault that keeps a home pool usable at midday.

  • Club and society pools

A vault over the lap pool and deck, with the surrounds left open.

  • Competition and academy pools

Even light for timing and coaching, and cover over the stands.

  • School and campus pools

An all-weather cover that lengthens the swimming season.

  • Hotels and resorts

A shaded poolside that still feels like an outdoor space.

  • Aquatics complexes

A multi-bay roof over several pools and their decks.

Specification

What gets specified.

There is no fixed spec. Structure, membrane and finish are recommended after we have seen the site, the layout, the local wind and the budget.

Structure
Barrel vault, sail / hypar, ridge-and-valley, or a deck-only cantilever
Membrane
Coated architectural fabric (PVC, PVDF or PTFE), chosen for translucency and a cleanable surface
Frame
Hot-dip galvanised steel with a paint or duplex system; stainless cables and fittings
Light
Translucent membrane for even, shadow-free daylight over the water
Coverage
The pool only, the pool and deck, or the pool, deck and spectator seating
Opening roof
A retractable system where the pool needs sun as well as shade
Warranty
One year on structure and workmanship; five to fifteen years on the membrane, by fabric grade

FAQ

Common questions.

All questions
  1. Not with a translucent membrane. It diffuses daylight evenly over the water and removes the hard shadows and glare, which is why competition pools favour it.

  2. It will attack ordinary steel and fittings, which is why pool roofs use hot-dip galvanised steel with a paint or duplex system, and stainless cables and fittings.

  3. Yes, with a retractable roof. It carries a one-year warranty on the complete system: mechanism, drive and controls together with the structure.

  4. It keeps leaves, dust and rain off the water, which lightens the load on the filters and the cleaning routine. The roof itself still needs a periodic wash.
